One day, a deputy knocked on their door. According to the deputy, some chickens had turned up missing and the owner was sure they had taken them. The chicken’s owner had written down their license plate number and the deputy had to follow up.
Seeking help and afraid, they arrived at ECIRMAC on a Friday afternoon. He was maybe 55 – 60 years old and his wife in her early 50’s. They were neatly dressed and looked as if they had worked hard their whole lives.
This older couple was originally from Mexico and they explained to the deputy, they never took a chicken (as a side note—catching a free range chicken is for the young (with luck) or the coyotes) but they have seen them. But that was not why they came to us. Mr. was afraid that the deputy would discover he has never been able to pass the written part of the driver’s test (so he doesn’t have a license). We explained not to worry—the deputy was satisfied they didn’t take the chickens and we’d try and find a volunteer to help tutor him in the rules of the road so he could pass the written test.
